About

We write about the feeling, not the checklist

Who we are, how we choose destinations and why every ARIKI guide starts with the feeling behind a trip rather than the map.

Our philosophy

Most trips begin with a feeling, not a destination.

Nobody wakes up wanting to visit a coordinate. They want quiet, or novelty, or a long dinner somewhere warm, or a week with nothing in the calendar. ARIKI is organised around those five feelings, because that is how people actually decide.

Everything we publish is written to answer one question: is this the right place for the thing you are trying to feel, and is this the right month to feel it in.

Mission and values

What we hold to

Honesty first

If a place is crowded in August, we say so. If a famous walk is a queue, we point you at the better one nobody photographs.

Season over sight

When you go matters more than what you see. Almost every guide we publish is built around timing.

Fewer, better

Thirty six guides, not three thousand. Each one is written to be useful for a real trip rather than to fill a page.

Leave it as you found it

We favour locally owned places, quieter shoulder seasons and travel that does not wear out the destination.

Responsible travel

Travel is not neutral. Flights have a cost, popular towns get worn down, and money spent badly leaves a place no better off. We are a guide rather than a tour operator, so the most useful thing we can do is send people to the right places at the right time of year, and towards businesses that are owned where they operate.

In practice that means recommending shoulder seasons, longer stays in fewer places, local guesthouses over international chains, trains where the train is realistic, and being honest when somewhere is already at capacity.

What readers tell us

"I was not sure where to go, only that I needed to stop. ARIKI asked what I wanted to escape from, which turned out to be the right question. We booked Ravello in May and came home different people."

"The Iceland guide read like it was written by someone who had actually driven it in bad weather. Every stop made sense, and the advice about the east fjords saved our trip."

"We wanted no itinerary at all. I used the Unwind section as a shortlist and it was the first holiday in years where nobody asked what the plan was."

"What I like is that it does not try to sell you anything. It is a magazine you read for ideas, then you go and book it yourself. Refreshing, honestly."

"The quiet side of Madeira piece sent us to the north coast in winter. Empty trails, mild sun, a guesthouse with six rooms. Best week we have had in a long time."

"I would never have thought of Georgia on my own. Three days in the city, two in the mountains, and now I keep telling everybody about it."
