A Fine Dining Weekend in Copenhagen

Copenhagen · 7 min read

Copenhagen has more good restaurants per resident than almost anywhere, and a food culture that spread from here to the rest of the continent. A weekend built around eating is a legitimate reason to go.

It is expensive, but there are more ways around that than people assume.

How to structure the eating

One tasting menu is enough. Book it three months out for the famous places, or take a bar seat at a smaller kitchen where reservations open closer to the date.

Balance it with lunch. Many high end restaurants serve a shorter midday menu at a fraction of the evening price, and it is the same kitchen.

The everyday version

Smorrebrod is the city's great lunch: rye bread, pickled herring, potato and dill, eaten with a beer and a snaps. A traditional basement restaurant does this better than any modern reinterpretation.

Reffen and Broens Gadekokken cover the casual end, and the bakeries are genuinely world class. A cardamom bun and a coffee is a perfectly respectable breakfast plan.

Between meals

Rent a bike immediately. The city is flat, the infrastructure is total, and it halves the time between neighbourhoods.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is thirty five minutes north by train and one of the best museums in Europe. In summer, swim in the harbour at Islands Brygge, which is clean enough to be a civic amenity.

Why it feels like a gift

A weekend here is a genuinely memorable food trip, and the city itself is calm, green and easy to move around.

Book the restaurant first and the flights afterwards.
