The Maldives is a narrow idea done extremely well. You fly to one island, you stay on it, and the entire holiday takes place within a few hundred metres of warm water.
Because you cannot change your mind once you arrive, choosing the right island matters more here than in any other destination.
Choosing an island
Resorts near Male are reached by twenty minute speedboat, which keeps transfer costs and travel time down. Further atolls need a seaplane, which is expensive, daylight only and genuinely spectacular.
Small islands feel personal. Large ones have more restaurants and more people. Ask how many villas there are before you ask about the spa.
House reef or lagoon
The single most important question is whether the island has a good house reef. If it does, you can snorkel from the beach twice a day and never book an excursion. If it does not, every underwater experience becomes a boat trip.
Water villas give you the view and the ladder into the sea. Beach villas give you shade, space and a garden, and they usually cost less.
Making the week work
Full board or half board is worth costing out carefully. On a private island there is no alternative restaurant, and drinks in particular add up quickly.
Book the spa, the sandbank dinner and one dive or manta trip in advance. Otherwise, do nothing. That is the product.
Why it feels like a gift
Nowhere else removes decisions this completely, and for a genuinely tired traveller that is the whole point.
Combine it with a few days in Sri Lanka or Dubai if a week of stillness feels like too much.
