An Off Season Escape to the Algarve

The Algarve has a reputation problem that only applies for about ten weeks a year. Outside July and August the coast turns into one of the best winter walking destinations in Europe, with mild days, empty beaches and prices that fall by half.
The cliffs do not know it is November.
The western coast
West of Lagos the development stops and the Costa Vicentina begins: a protected coastline of surf beaches, wind bent pines and villages like Carrapateira and Odeceixe that stay small by law.
The Rota Vicentina fishermen's trail runs along the cliff edge for days at a time. It is exposed, sandy underfoot and one of the finest coastal walks anywhere.
Inland and eastern alternatives
Inland, the Serra de Monchique smells of eucalyptus and offers hot springs at Caldas. It is twenty minutes from the coast and feels like another region entirely.
In the east, the Ria Formosa lagoon and the island beaches off Tavira are quiet all year. Ferries run less often in winter, which is part of the appeal.
What is actually open
Larger towns such as Lagos, Tavira and Faro stay busy enough to keep restaurants running. Purpose built resort strips can feel shuttered, so base yourself in a real town.
Expect some days of rain in December and January. Bring layers, book a place with heating, and treat it as a walking holiday with beaches attached.
Why it works as an escape
It is the cheapest way to reach reliable winter sun and empty coastline from northern Europe.
Go once out of season and the high summer version stops making sense.
